Helio100 winner of WWF-SA Climate Solver

We are proud to announce Helio100 was awarded as one of three innovators in the WWF Climate Solver platform.

With South Africa faring poorly on innovation indexes, WWF-SA views Climate Solvers as a tool to support innovation in South Africa, by assisting in the identification of problems, barriers and challenges faced by enterprises at the different stages of product development – research and development (R&D) and market uptake, as well as other hindrances that prevent the diffusion of these technologies to the wider society.

STERG at Physics Department awareness event

The Physics department, in collaboration with the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies and the Solar Thermal Energy Research Group organised an outreach/awareness event on the 15th of April 2016 on the main campus of Stellenbosch University. The main display was a 12 square-meter parabolic dish which was used to cook soup, while STERG members used a smaller solar cooker to braai boerewors for students on campus. An article about the event was also published on the Stellenbosch University news page.

The event created an opportunity for us to share the principles of concentrating solar power with the rest of Stellenbosch University and a fun day in the sun was had by all!

Some STERG members after a match of 5-aside soccer

On Friday, 4 March 2016, old and new STERG members came together for a few games of 5-aside soccer. Quarterly social events are part of the STERG tradition and is a relaxed way to get to know fellow researchers in  the group.  These social events are open for any STERG members and are normally close to the date of the quarterly meetings.  For any members who is not yet on the STERG mailing list, please contact Leigh Pina to include you.

Solar thermal craft beer

“Western Cape-based brewery Cape Brewing Company (CBC) has, with the help of renewable- energy company E3 Energy Group of Companies, produced what it says is South Africa’s first commercially available green beer, using water heated by the sun”, Engineering News reported.

The Centre of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies had some input into this project which is hopefully just the start of demonstrating the value solar thermal energy has in local commercial and industrial processes.  Learn more about this project by E3 Energy in this video.

IRENA Internship Programme

“The IRENA Internship Programme offers a small number of outstanding students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to IRENA operations.

The purpose of the internship Programme is to provide a framework through which graduate and/or university students from diverse academic backgrounds may be assigned to the IRENA Agency to enhance their educational experience through practical work assignments. It allows selected candidates to gain insight into the work of the Agency and provides assistance and training in various professional fields.”

Students and/or graduates of STERG are encouraged to consider applying for this internship.  Learn more about this opportunity here.
